At Bream Bay College a device is recommend as essential. There will be access to computers in all classrooms but not having a device will be a disadvantage. Below is some helpful information to consider when making your purchase.

Specifications:

  • Wireless networking capability using 802.11g or n or above.
  • A colour screen. Minimum screen size 8–10 inches.
  • An external keyboard or other means of entering text. Clip on, Bluetooth, etc is suitable for a tablet
  • An audio-out port and ear buds or headphones.
  • A minimum battery life of 4 hours of use on one battery charge.
  • The ability to run a full functioning, recent web browser (Chrome, Firefox, Safari etc) that will allow it to access Google Apps and other learning resources.
  • Virus protection program (for computers running a Windows or Macintosh computer operating system).
  • Operating System requirements–Windows 7 or higher, Max OSX 7 or higher,
Android 4.1 (Jelly Bean) or higher and Apple IOS 6 or higher.
  • A web camera with built in microphone
  • A laptop sleeve or bag or device protective cover

In addition but not essential:

  • The device comes with productivity software (word processing, drawing, spreadsheet tools) or it can be downloaded and installed. Note the Openoffice suite of software is like the Microsoft Office suite and is free to download and use on a computer. Gimp is a free piece of software like Adobe Photoshop which you can use on a laptop.

Recommendations for year levels:

  • Tablets are suitable for year 7 to 9 students
  • Laptops are needed for students in year 10 to 13

Note: The latest range of laptops are Tablet PCs. These allow the screen to be rotated fully and then they can be used like a tablet in Windows 10 tablet mode. These devices give laptops “tablet functionality” although there are currently not as many apps available for them as a tablet.
